Chobits: A Love Story of Humanoid Computers

As technology advances, robots are becoming increasingly human-like, and the rise of generative AI has further blurred the boundary between human and machine. When fictional characters can take physical form through “humanoid computers,” human–AI romance is no longer mere fantasy but a possible emotional relationship.

Using the worldbuilding of the manga Chobits as its point of departure, this book examines the growing reality of virtual romance and AI companions, and considers how humans may learn to coexist with humanoid computers. It organizes the various forms of human–machine intimacy portrayed in the work, then extends the discussion to what “love” and “marriage” mean—and what roles humanoid computers might play within them. Finally, it reflects on whether machines that increasingly resemble humans should also be granted certain rights.
